Press Release:
Mitsui Fine Arts is pleased to present “The Stories of Textiles”, our first exhibition of Japanese textiles. We have selected works from a short period, around the turn of the 20th century, mainly comprising of furoshiki (wrapping cloths) and a few kimonos.
This exhibition features a collection of pieces originating from different corners of Japanese society at the time. Woven in the fibers of each work is a story. At times these stories are easily discernible, leaving plenty of information in their graphic design, material, and marks of wear. At others, they are shrouded in mystery.
-
The exhibition showcases a wide range of Japanese traditions and techniques in weaving, mending, stitching, dyeing, and more. Some of these traditions and techniques have been preserved and passed down to the present, while others have either been modified or entirely lost over recent generations.
-
While there is an undeniable beauty to their design, material, and technical sophistication, it is worth noting that these works were first and foremost recognized for the utility they provided. These textiles were everyday objects in their previous lives; the results of years of experience, crafted by artisans that carefully considered the smallest details with their intended use in mind. They are the stories of the people who made them, as well as those who used them. A new steward becomes a part of that story.
