Like his father, Hashimoto Bunsui, Kaikan was a teacher of Confucian classics in the service of the Akashi domain. He had built a reputation of his own as an esteemed scholar and was also known as a great poet, and a gifted self-taught painter. Kaikan was the father of Hashimoto Kansestu (1883-1945), who followed in Bunsai and Kaikan’s footsteps as a third-generation to a family of artists.

The Painting of the delightful and humorous painting by the 19th century Confucian scholar, Kaikan Hashimoto bursts out with happiness. With a few brushstrokes and dabs of color Kaikan conjures up the hen’s happiness. Not just the hen but the fully bloomed flowers and somewhat confused chicks are also filled with joy. One cannot help but smile looking at this painting.
