The plates belong to a category called Zakki (雑器), which means simple, ordinary, everyday utensils in Japanese. Renowned master craftspeople did not make works from this category for the rich and famous. Instead, they were made by highly skilled but “ordinary” people who poured their hearts into making treasures like these available to all. While I sincerely appreciate those works created by master artisans, I love extraordinary Zakki works equally.

This set of plates has a beautiful jazzy rhythm on the surface. They have survived as a set for over a century! I am not sure what the patterns are supposed to be. Plants? Sea horses? Are some strange creatures having a bad hair day? Whatever the case, this set of plates creates a playful air. Line them up on your credenza. They make you dance with their curving lines, unusual motifs, and rhythm.
