This kimono is shrouded in mystery. I have never seen a kimono-like this one before. Three things immediately stand out: first, there is a crest stenciled on it, indicating it was a bespoke kimono for a wealthy female patron; second, it is made of a thickly woven cotton, usually only used to make kimonos for workers; third, patterns are stenciled onto both sides of the textile, which is extremely rare.
I consulted a textile dealer, who's knowledge on kimonos is encyclopedic. Even she had never encountered anything like it. Nor did she have any answers for its mysterious characteristics. I always find it delightful to discover something so elegant that was made to intentionally break all the rules and conventions.
This textile is waiting for a new life to reflect the mysterious woman's rebellious nature that ordered a kimono so far outside of the box. Furthermore, the work demonstrates an artisan's respect for their own craft and his delight to conspire with his client's plot.
What would you do with its defiant beauty in the 21st century way. Do you feel the connection with the mysterious lady?
