Birds in autumn

sumi ink and color on silk

This painting is from early Showa period when Japanese artists started to experiment with perspective. It is very apparent here in the way the bird and the plants are set on different perspective planes. However, the painting presents an eery and unsettling harmony. Once one is accustomed to this floating feeling, one can become quite enthralled with it.
